CHARLEY'S AUNT

By Brandon Thomas
A comedy in three acts and a dress

Mistaken identity, cross-dressing, deranged uncles and ravished heroines - Brandon Thomas' sparkling comedy of Victorian manners has been described as "Shakespeare without the swords" and contains more plot than any decent play really has a right to in seventy-five minutes!

The plot - in which Mr. Wykeham gains the notable distinction of becoming his own second cousin - Jack and Charley need the latter's Aunt to be a Chaperon - he has never met her but that does not matter since she does not materialize.  Thus in order to spend the afternoon with their gals they persuade another friend, Lord Fancourt Babberly, to impersonate her.  Meanwhile Jack's father has lost all his money and is persuaded to seek a wealthy wife - Charley's aunt for example.  The guardian and uncle of the girls that are the centre of the chaps' attention also has designs on Charley's aunt's purse and pursues the disguised Babbs.  Enter the REAL Charley's Aunt... from Brazil (where the nuts come from)... and things begin to get just a little bit out of hand...!
