Minutes of 2003 AGM Monday 5th May 2003

as taken by Julia Short

1. Present

Julia Short, Catherine Howdle, Noga Zivan, Elizabeth Baldwin, Miles Gould, Duncan Coutts, Ruth Weyman, Sally Close, Emily Burton, Harry Ullman
Apologies:
Keith Crothers, Dominic Mattos, Clare Cruise, Christopher Nairne, Simon Wang, Natalie Wells, Craig Walsh, Annas Alazami.
Immediate wine debt for the above (I personally feel this is unfair as they did at least let us know, but I'm told this is how it works! I think certain other people who just 'forgot' or were too busy should be in wine debt - not mentioning any names Rhi and Mike!)

2. Confirmation of last minutes

Last minutes were slightly amended - apparently last year we decided that each new committee should invent a drink (ours was Purple Abuse, invented by the lovely Cath on VOLES) But other than that, they were fine!

3. Constitutional amendments

It was suggested that the rule that the president should direct the pantomime was removed from the constitution and this was agreed.
It was also agreed that the post of Vice-President (or president of vice) should continue this year.
It was also suggested that last year's rule of the president and secretary not reading the constitution be removed but this was voted against on the basis that the treasurer and vice-president can read them and inform the president and secretary of anything they need to know. It was also pointed out that this gave Needham greater scope for controlling the president by only letting her know about rules he wanted her to know about.

4. Financial matters

This was postponed in the hope that the treasurer might show up at some point.

5. Flosscars

Category suggestions were agreed - (e-mail to follow) The date has been set as Friday of 7th week, starting with a meal at some Polish place on Cowley Road and followed by the ceremony at Noga and Duncan's house, housemates permitting.

6. New Committee

The new committee were 'elected' and are as follows:
President - Ruth Weyman
Vice-president - Dominic Mattos ('elected' by phone)
Treasurer - Sally Close
Secretary - to be confirmed
Sally Close only agreed to take on the role of treasurer if she was allowed to do the accounts in binary or base 3, which was agreed. Each 'election' was accompanied by much cheering and strange pumping motions from Elizabeth. There then followed a long conversation about spanking and bumps and a call for laxatives for the motions.

7. Social Events

It was agreed that OULES tea be reinstated - this is to be held in Miles' room (7 Weston Buildings) on Monday, Julia's room (Bell 6, Queen's College) on Tuesday and Wednesdays and the MCR in Wadham on Thursdays and Fridays, all at 4pm. At this point Duncan (amazingly) shut up and Miles decided to agree on a point that Elizabeth had made some 10 minutes previously.

Harry suggested a Whit Friday event, involving brass bands (Cath?) and alcohol and Morris dancing or a Maypole. Ruth then decided to inform us repeatedly in a Dorset accent that girls couldn't do morris dancing because the crops wouldn't grow. After the 5th or 6th time, Miles resorted to banging his head upon the table.

Duncan then started to explode and complained that as part of his election, Rakesh had promised orgies and threesomes, but that this had not happened. Thankfully the motion was opposed, due to Ruth going red and spluttering lots and general outrage from everyone else.

Noga proposed to reinstate regular trips to G&D's, Elizabeth suggested somewhere other than G&D's, Sally suggested Tuesday Jazz nights (cue 'jazz hands'!) Beerwalking, punting and duck-feeding were also proposed and by this stage there were calls for laxative again.

8. Drama Fair

This is taking place on Thursday of 3rd week between 5.30 and 7.30 in Wadham Old Refectory. Cath called for volunteers and duly recruited some. Emily is to coordinate some sort of photoboard. It was also pointed out that OULES got a mention in the OUDS mail (our cult status is growing).

9. TAFF/OULES punt joust

This will take place in 9th week on the sunniest day. Ruth volunteered to stand on the bank and laugh. It was proposed that the punter be dressed as horse, adopt a horse name and neigh lots. It was also suggested that we kidnap Kit to punt for us. A picnic was also suggested which led to random waffling from Elizabeth about hampers until Julia killed her on request from Cath. At this point Miles once again made a comment about a conversation that was 10 minutes old (not really paying attention!)

10. Varsity match

This will be taking place on Saturday of 8th or Sunday of 9th week. Duncan is to sort out parts and it was agreed that it might be an idea to rehearse (even though clearly we're going to be much better than those tabs!)

11. (well 4 actually) Financial matters

Cath and Julia both attempted to phone treasurer but no luck, so financial matters were done on the estimate of us having around £1000. At this point much shock all round as Emily asked who Freddy Mercury is - situation was quickly saved by Cath explaining to her - still not quite sure how Freddy Mercury got into the accounts but this is OULES. It was decided that having £1000 is not very good for a non-profiting making organisation, so steps need to be taken to rectify the situation. After much debate it was decided that we leave £400 to cover next year's shows. £400 is to be split evenly among 4 charities; Oxford House, Save the Children, Send a Cow and Kenya Orphanage International (see Elizabeth if you want any details on these charities).

It was also decided that we should acquire a locker, Cath is going to look into this.

A domain site was suggested, but rejected on the grounds that we already have a perfectly good site which is free.

A suggestion to give the old people's home that gave us some money a present was also rejected on the grounds that it is a private home.

£30 is to be given for the Varsity match.

Cath proposed that OULES give £50 for Two Shades of Blue's performances at the Edinburgh Fringe, but this was rejected.

It was agreed that VOLES will be subsidised if it's likely to be expensive and T-shirts will be subsidised.

12. AOB

A motion was passed that Dominic is brilliant and beautiful!
Anyone interested in Wadstock is to see Cath.
Rakesh (former president of vice) has left OULES due to medical reasons.
The meeting then ended and everyone went to the bar to discuss T-shirt designs.

Right, well done if you made it this far! Sorry they're so long and waffly, but it was a rather long and waffly meeting! Extra things to add:
The OULES balance is currently £1080.
Cath has discovered a place that will do T-shirts for around £3 each, with an initial fee of £20 which will come from the accounts.

And to end, here are some choice quotes from the meeting:
"Great minds think alike and dirty minds rarely differ." (Noga)
"Moving back from the borders of insanity." (Cath)
"I seem to have a ridge along my back - oh well, I'll just fumble with it till it goes away" (Elizabeth)
"The original script isn't the original script" (Cath)
After lots of spluttering and redness from Ruth; "I think the motion's about to pass" (Cath)
"Where's this hair come from? It's like a really long pubic hair" (Elizabeth)
During a conversation about having VOLES near a beach; "Beeches are great, they're really good to climb." (Duncan. Miles then has to have this explained to him - really rather slow!)
"A meeting is an occasion where people get together, some to say what they do not think and other to not say what they really do." (Well, actually that was the quote in my diary for Monday, but I felt it rather appropriate!)
